508 Guide Problems

Is anyone having trouble downloading the program guide in the 508? My progress indicator goes up 'bout 1/2 way then it freezes. I can't use my guide because it wants to download every time I press the button.

Try rebooting it (hold power button in for 10 seconds).

Otherwise, it'll probably clear itself overnight when the updated EPG hits.

I've been dealing with this for a week now. I've held the power button in 'till the record light comes on. I've left it shut off (but plugged in) for hours, and I've left in unplugged for hours. Even a "check switch" fails to work. If I select guide, all I get is a message stating, "Program information on the hard drive is outdated. Retrieve program information from the satellite now? YES CANCEL NO" It doesn't matter what I push, it never works. All other features of the system (PVR, skip, etc) work as normal. Any other thoughts? Hardware OR Software? Running P222. 501 in another room works fine.

OK, Lemme grasp at a straw for you.

Try disconnecting the satellite feed. Run Check Switch. Unplug box. Run Check Switch again. If it's there, do a "Reset to Factory Defaults" (sorry, I forget if the 508 has that). NOTE: It should NOT kill your recordings.

Your box should now be in as good a state as possible to accept the guide.

Plug satellite feed back in and run Check Switch. Leave it plugged in but "off" overnight. Cross fingers and toes.

My 508 seems to be current.

Well, I disconnected the feed and ran a switch test and made it as far as test 5 of 38, then it froze for over 30min. So, I disconnected the power cord and waited a couple of minutes...ran switch test with feed disconnected...completed test (no switch found)...powered the box off...connected feed...ran switch test successfully...then it went though the "1 of 5" tests fine...then it attepted to download the program guide and the progress meter makes it about 2/3 of the way across and stops for about 5min, then video appears! NO GUIDE. I hope if I have to RMA this 508 that they don't shove a 510 down my throat with another $5/mo fee.

I thought that it did...but the info-browse-theme is not available on my 508

Will leave it on standby overnight to see if that helps. I hope so, as I have some good shows and even Wolf Blitzer/CNN from 03/21/2002 when the US started bombing Iraq and "Shock And Awe" was underway. Not that I agree with the campaign, but I would like to keep it. Guess I better break out the VHS! I was pressing my luck by leaving it on there for over 2 years anyway.
