Hi All,

On this 522, Does the box ever shut all the way down? The reason I ask is because you can use the remote or manually turn off both tuners. The lights are off on the box indicating that both tuners are off. However, whenever I turn the TV on first, I always get the "Dish Network" bouncing screensaver that states "Press slect button to continue". The 522 still does not show any activity because all of the lights are off. Press select on the remote and the tuner comes up and the light on the box comes on. This (to me) indicates that the 522 is never totally "Off". It is like a "standby mode" maybe? Any input would be appreciated!

If "Standby" is actually what it is doing then this defeats what D* suggest. They suggest that you "power off" the unit at night when it is not in use so that it can receive updates etc. I guess the only way to power the system off is to hold the power button on the box for 5 seconds so that it can reset?

There is only one way to really turn a satellite receiver off, and that is by unplugging it. When you do what appears to be turning off a satellite receiver you are putting the unit into standby mode. This is normal and common practice, and will allow guide information and software updates to be passed on to your receiver when needed. Don’t worry you’re fine.

BTW- D* means DirecTV, E* means Dish Network (Echostar) :)

Push the "Off" button on your remote. Watch the receiver's light go off. As far as anyone is concerned, it is off.

When you do this, the receiver is in "Standby" mode. If you turn it off completely, that would make it rather difficult to get a software update, don't you think ?? It would also make it hard to record a timer that you set for a time when you weren't around. Unless of course you leave the receiver on.

Holding the power button in for "x" seconds doesn't turn it off either...

Is this true? - do you need to power off to get updates?
I notice that my tv2 automatically shuts off, but I haven't been shutting off the tv1. is it really necessary? - why can't it receive updates if it's on?

Welcome aboard ctoso!

Yes, it is required to turn off TV1, although there have been reports that after a long period of inactivity, the box will do it itself.

It is deliberate to not reboot itself - if it's on, it thinks you're using it. :)

The actual download may be occuring whenever there's a tuner sitting idle.

Just to reiterate what SimpleSimon said, if TV1 is "on", how does it know if you're watching something or not ?? It can't.... It has to assume that someone is sitting there watching it, even if it's been on one channel for 9 hours. :)

If it's "on" when it wants to do an update, it will prompt you. If you don't answer the prompt, I have to guess that it goes ahead and does the update.
