View Full Version : UTV loss of a receiver
I love my UTV, but recently one receiver (#1)went dead. I have tried everything I can think of. Rebooting, short and long, changed inputs. No luck. I don't want to switch to Tivo. Has anybody come across this problem?

The same thing happened to me. One day, it just would not turn on. I tried everything. But, to no avail. So, I called DirecTV and they provided a new Tivo 35 hour unit and installation for $99. Happened about 4 months ago.

I'd say you have no choice in this matter, since UTV is no longer being manufactured.
Why are you so against the DirecTV DVR with TiVo?
You can always try E-bay.

Tuners go out fairly routinely in UTV's unfortunately. I have 5 UTV's in my house and have 3 tuner failures over a 4 year period. I have used the DirecTV Tivo unit a couple of times and it does not compare to UTV so I know how you feel about not wanting to give up your UTV. Luckily, you do not need to give it up-you can have it repaired at CCS in New Jersey for $130. They will even change the hard drive if it is out for that price. If you go this route tell them that you want the both tuners changed and that you want new Max2104 IC's. I understand they will do this for you for the same price-$130.
The other option is to buy a unit on Ebay. I have bought 3 units on Ebay and they have pretty much been as advertised by the seller. The going rate for a good one is $100 - $125.

I have actually been pretty lucky. I have three UTV's and have not had any tuner problems. One thing, though, is to make sure the UTV has plenty of ventilation. They run very hot. I have mine raised 1" above the shelf using four cut PVC pipes painted black to match the RCA. It isn't noticable, but hopefully it is extending the life of the unit. I bought one unit off EBay with no problems. One of mine is now over three years old and still plugging along. I will be most sad when it is time to replace them with D*Tivo's when that time comes.
Thanks for the replys and comments. I'm going to hang in with one reciver working. My wife has Tivo and loves it. For my use, I still feel that the UTV out performs Tivo. But.......so be it.
