Hello all,

I am about ready to order Directv with Tivo for 3 rooms. Plus I want local channels (in the SF Bay Area). Of the 3 rooms that I will have Directv in, I want 2 of them to have Tivo.

What type of dish should I get? I am pretty sure a single LNB dish is not adequate. But I don't know you would need a Triple LNB dish vs a dual line LNB dish, vs a standard dish. Can someone explain the roles and requirements of LNBs? Or perhaps point to a FAQ that would?

TIA,
neal

In the SFBay area the locals are carried on Direct's main satellite so unless you have some foreign language requirement or need HD then the standard dish will do plus of course a 2x8 switch to accommodate your 5 leads required ( 2+2+1 ). The standard dish has an LNB which has two leads which goes to the switch that creates 8 outputs.

That being said if you're going to have the install done as part of a new customer install let them install it. Probably will be a triple dish and a cascading 4x8 switch. Better for future requirements but not currently necessary in the Bay area.

Thanks Larry.

Roughly speaking, is it correct that you need one LNB per satellite used?

Yes. There are 3 sat locations. The 101, 119, and the 110.
The 101 is the main sat location.
If you wanted to be able to recieve a signal from all of the sats, you would need the Oval dish with 3 LNBs.

You may want to highly consider getting the Oval even if you don't need it at the moment. DTV is moving alot of local area markets over to the 119 sat.

Thank you Tweak.

BTW, is there a particular DirecTivo receiver that you guys recommend? From what I understand, they are all pretty much the same under the cover. What about reliability? Warranty? or Remote?

Thanks again. You guys, and the whole forum are very helpful.

Just in case there were other noobs out there like me, I thought I would point out this FAQ, which I found by reading some of the other threads here.

Hey everyone,

I just went to Circuit City tonight and bought two Samsung DirecTivo receivers for $50 + tax each ($99 - $50 for new customer rebate). Tomorrow, I call to schedule the installation. I am really psyched to have Tivo finally. Watching the Olympics really made me see the value of having a DVR. Plus I will finally be able to get all my football team's games.

Thanks for the help everyone.
