yesterday i had recieved the new HDTV reciever and TV from Dish. So far i am pretty happy with everything but on the TV I recieved there is always a small letter P on the lower left area of the screen. I called Dish last night and they didn't know what it was so i came here to see if anyone else has had this problem and maybe knows how to fix it. Thanks for the help

Welcome aboard!
I doubt it has anything to do with the 811 (that IS what you have, yes?).
You don't say which type of HDTV you got, so I can't try to look anything up.
First thing - read every page of the manual and see if you can find it.

I have now called Dish 3 times and stumped them everytime. today i called a place that dose intaliation and he sounded like he might be able to help me but who knows. I will take a better look at the TV manual and see if i find anything also. Thanks for the help.

The TV is in the program mode. Press the volume down button on the TV and hold it until the red P disappears. The red P means that more than likely the Small Signal Board has been replaced at some time and someone forgot to take it out of the program mode. Hope this helps..

Now that is some marvelous information. I personally don't have this problem, but for those that do, that is why these forums are so cool!

Just wondering, are you an RCA TV technician? If so, are you are willing to share some information on how to get into programming mode on the 34"? I wanted to see if I could improve the dark areas in the DVI video but after 269 I don't feel quite the same need. Also, my picture shows darker on the left and right sides of the screen during bright backgrounds (like ice hockey). Kind of like vertical ovals of darker screen. It is not too noticeable in most programing. Can this be compensated?

My first Toshiba 34" HD set had a similar problem, and even my current set has irregularities on solid color screens, like the ice hockey on ND-Net.
I had those dark areas when I had the piece of crap tv, it looks like its burned in but it's something about beams or whatever not bent correctly. I had Dish come and pick up the piece of crap.

The picture tube in these sets are Toshiba tubes but I am not familiar enough with these sets to know of any quirks yet. I have only worked on one of these sets and had to replace the Small Signal Board. I have sold 3 or 4 of the RCA 34" sets but have had no complaints from anybody that has bought one. As far as how to get into the service menu, I will get back on that one as I have to check the service literature.

Here are the instructions for getting into the service menu on the 34" Dish HDTV's.. !!!! Warning!!!! Be sure to write down any values that you change so you can return to defaults. Also make no adjustment to any tuner settings.. Note: Before the Field Service Mode is exited, you must check "Store", then press ok on the remote or all changes to alignments will be lost. Do not change the picture tube type in the tube menu!
Entering the TV Service mode using front panel controls.
Leave TV in the off mode. Press and hold the Volume Down and Channel Down buttons for at least 8 Seconds. After 8 seconds the instrument will switch on and come up with the field service main menu on the screen. The channel up and down buttons on the front panel are used to navigate up or down in the menu. Volume up and down buttons are used to select a menu item or decrease or increase a value in a selection list.
As I said, be careful in the service menu!!! You can screw things up real good if you aren't careful.
The folks who don't see the dark areas must only watch movies. It's terrible on sporting events especially hockey.

Actually, mine is barely noticeable. I think that it got a lot better after the last two SW releases because I was able to turn down the black level on the 34". Sure, I would like to have a Sony but this fit my budget and the Sony was over $1200 more at the time. I am now satisifed with the picture.
RBenson,
Would you share any other information on getting into service menu's for other manufacturers, or are they dependent upon the model of the set?

This is exactly why I'm not buying a HDTV set yet! It's not perfect. Also, not everything isn't in HDTV. Perhaps I'll buy one in 2012.

Feel free to continue missing the show.
As for the issues mentioned in this thread, most (all?) of them (or their equivalents) can happen with standard TVs, too.
Once you've spent more than a few minutes with an HDTV, you'll never go back - even SD looks a lot better - at least on my rear projection Philips 60". :)

OK, now why don't you go into your color settings and turn them off. After all, black and white is about as perfect as you can get.... :p

To be fair, I just bought an HD OTA receiver, just to kind of test the waters. It looks spectacular on my SD set, and yes, I've seen HD on and HD set... mostly, I want the prices to come down a bit more on the sets.

What's your desired price level for HD sets? There's a host of HD sets in the $700 to $1000 price range, starting with 27" standard screen and 30" wide screen direct view CRT receivers. For around $950 you can get an Akai or Panasonic 42" HDTV monitor projection receiver.
OK, so they're not as cheap as a conventional TV, but they're ready for the digital TV changeover, they make DVD's look spectacular, and as more HD content becomes available on the networks, there will be a compelling reason to get an HD receiver.
You've tested the water a bit with your OTA receiver (curious to know the make and model) -- now, jump in with both feet and enjoy!

Except when you hit a channel that overcompresses into oblivion. "Garbage in Garbage out", if you tune a station that is truly crap then the big screen, HD or not, tends to amplify the crap into a new realm of crapiness... But when you surf into the infamous HDNet zone...you start salivating, your eyes bulge, (maybe the Levis too...hehe..I beat Gary to that punchline...), you get a little sweaty, grip that UHF remote a little tighter, and you thank GOD ABOVE for Mr. Cuban and Mr. Garvin. Then you save the channel as your only favorite. :sure:
Sorry I had to.....

JasonYeah, I'm starting to pay more attention to the pixellation and mud that I'm seeing. Too many people mentioning it, and I couldn't block it out of my mind any more. :p

Isn't it cool how how people explode into chunks of pixels? Reminds me of the Exorcist?
Now I could watch "Bikini Destinations" or "Get Out" or even that chick on "True Music" all night long on HDNet. With the wife and 3 kids it's the closest I'll ever get to Playboy-HD...

RBenson, Could you provide a list of error codes? or possibly find the meaning of error code 33 and/or 66. Thanks for the service menu tip :hurah:
