My 721 hard drive happily crashed on me last night. Got it working again today, however the format (of course) lost everything I had recorded. Anyone got any ideas on how to get these back, PLUS, should I be worried about total hard drive failure now?

The recordings are gone.
Yes, you should be worried about total failure. Get your E* warranty active. ;)
My hard drive on my 721 started making clicking sounds Monday night. I unplugged it overnight and started it up again yesterday morning. After trying several times to do a reinstall, it reported a hard drive failure. I called Dish and was told that it was out of warrantee and a new one would cost over $600 but that they would sell me a used one for $36 (+shipping I believe). Then she told me that I could pay $5.99/mo for a warrantee and they would replace it for nothing...even after I told her that it had already failed! I signed up and my replacement will arrive tomorrow.
The kicker is, it also covers my 921. At $1000, I have been a bit concerned about it failing. $5.99/mo is cheap insurance for never having to worry about over $1600 worth of equipment. I have never been too comfortable with hard drives running/recording constantly. It's not a matter of if it will fail, just when. :)
Follow-up...
Thought a little good news would be nice for a change.
Replacement 721 arrived 9/9 as promised. Installed and activated with no problems. I'm back in business. Thank-you Dish. :)

You can cancel that $5.99 insurance now, if you want.
