View Full Version : DVD copy/recording
My computer has a DVD +R drive so I get a DVD recorder to record off satellite, then if I get the +R format, my computer will be able to copy the recordings to another DVD? I just wanted to make sure because I noticed there is +R and -R both. I thought I should get +R so I could make copies on the computer and -R wouldn't work in my case.
Thanks

+R and -R refer more to the media and what your drive / DVD recorder can deal with. Both oif them can be used for your intended purposes. For more help, see www.dvdrhelp.com - they can help you with all kinds of information.

Scooper: It dpends on the drive. Most ew burners CAN do both +R and -R, but older ones can not - so, each user has to evaluate what they've already got and go from there.

The entire -/+ issue is related to the file formatting and the way in which data from DVDs is read.
-R is widely accepted as the most compatible where playback on conventional DVD players are concerned, but newer players will work with either.
the +R/RW standard is a standard better suited for archiving data.
I can't remember the specifics but it has something to do with Sequential Read/Write vs. (I think) Linear Read/Write. Not sure which one is -R (I think Linear) and which is +R standards.
Next up is the +R DL (Dual Layer) which will effectively double the storage capacity from 4.7GB to a bit over 8GB. I've got one of the new Sony dual layer drives, the only thing missing right now is the media!

SimpleSimon - I know - I have a DVD +/- R /+-RW drive in my PC. I was trying to explain it in simple terms to someone who didn't understand what it all meant... Just correcting some bad assumptions on his part.
