I have a D* system with a Phillips IRD and this morning I awoke to the "searching for satellite signal" message. I first checked all the connections inside and out then checked the connection at the lnb all were clean and tight, Then I swaped the lnb with another one and the signal came back perfect. My question is it common for the lnb to just die ?

Well, I'm no D* expert, but yes, in general, electronic devices do "just die" at times.

It is rare for an LNB to go bad. Try reconnecting the original LNB. If it works correctly, then you probably have a grounding issue. D* is much more fickle about grounding & static buildup than E*.
SBCA states that 92% of all LNBs that are marked bad and returned are actually fine.

also check down inside every single connection, any stray peice of material that may be touching that center copper wire could also be shorting out your equipment and cause a major problem later, also check for any nails screws or staples used to affix cable on under or above your home which can also short out your lnbf and potentially your reciever

Then I swaped the lnb with another one and the signal came back perfect.Or be happy that the new LNB installation is working and leave it alone until a similar problem recurs. Rule of thumb: Once is a fluke; twice is a trend. :)

I think I'll stick with carloads advice and leave it alone for now, it's working fine. I haven't had time to put the old one back on to check. Think I'll just leave well enough alone. Thanks for the info guys.

No prob. But, I would definately look into your grounding to be on the safe side.

You could swap your lnb you removed on another dish to confirm it is bad. Just a suggestion.

Lmb question what is the difference between lnb and lnbf ? bothThe "F". :D
Actually, both LNB & LNBF are similarly correct - but both are also incomplete.
