Guys,

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, feel free to move me if necessary..

I'm in the Fort Smith market, and about to be upgrading/updating hardware to support the 72.5. I have been initially told that the 5500 series will support the locals after they have received a firmware update.

Is there a way to force update this model of receiver?

I've been looking for diag menus or similar functions on the net and came up empty handed.

I sure would hate to be stuck on site waiting for their receivers to take an update when I could have intervened manually.

Thanks for any info..

-Corey

-CoreyIf there is an upgrade available for your receiver, unplug it for 15 seconds (this is a standard reset) and then plug it back in. Give it 24 hours and if an upgrade is out there you'll have gotten it. They're done at different windows depending on brand and stuff, I know some are at like 2am, others are at 3pm pst. Reset and give it a day.

The issue is that I will be doing upgrades/installs for the new local channel market, and I don't have 24 hours to wait for the receiver. If the customer doesn't have the current required software, they don't get locals, correct?

How ARE you doing upgrades for 72.5, when D* has NOT even released any hardware info YET, nor even has those local signals uplinked yet?

My area manager is doing the installs for the networks on Monday, I believe.

We are using zinwell 6x8 switches. (self powered) for AU2 required installs. (HD, Para Todos..)

We are also using 4x4 switches for standard installations.

D* sent down a trainer last week, but I was out of the country at the time, so I didn't get the info until today.

We have yet to hear on the procedures for when we run across an activated ird that has not been updated to current software to support the switching. I was trying to be proactive in finding out HOW we could get the philips 5500 forced up to the current rev so I won't be wasting time swapping out receivers. My current best option I have been throwing around in my head is to call on the previous evening, and have the customer get phone connections to receivers if possible and power cycle the units to hopefully grab the update.

any suggestions?

Dark3D....
I am also in the Fort Smith area.
Correct me if I am wrong

1 - Software and program info is down loaded via the ODU, NOT the phone.
2 - When you activate locals, I would assume that D* has the software ready and waiting for the IRD's at the account you are upgrading; they know who has what...They authorized the W/O.

I was slamming Super Dishes (something to do until D* got their act together) and upgrades are easy (unless they are Legacy/59...another story). Select your switch type, run check switch, activate account, download software/menu. Something tells me that the D* guys do not want the installer standing around for a day to activate an upgrade :nono:

1. I understand the data path for software updates. I was fishing for a way to trigger updates on the spot. I was hoping that they could be taunted into updating similar to the dtivo units.

2. I spent two weeks in Wichita helping them catch up with picking up Pegasus and locals simultaneously. Their local market is provided over 110/119, so they would download local guide data during activation for me. I didn't want to assume anything in regards to the new switch. I'm under the impression that the philips 5500 have to be at rev 95 to support the new switch. Most everything we have in the box is at 92.

It's really frustrating to listen to them try to teach how the switching works with the flexports, so I get their version, and then dive into the documentation later.

With the 6x8 switches, they are telling me that you must get your first ird power to the switch. Then I am to tune the 1st ird to a 49x channel (495/494 if I remember) This is supposed to activate the first flexport. I am then to autoconfig the receiver to pick up the 72.5 sat.

My first response is that I'm getting 3rd hand information on the setup, and I'm just going to have to get my hands on one and play around with it.

I'd like to know why they didn't allow for off-air antenna switching. I was constantly running into customers in KS who wanted to retain their off-air capability. (I was switching from a round, to triplesat--removing the 3x4 switch) You start running out of siding after 3-4 diplexed runs!

I told the local shop that it would be a cold day in hell before they were going to talk a customer into paying 20 bucks a pop for diplexers. Guess what.. ?? Now they are FREE. Point for me..

3. They = Ironwood (My Current Employer).

Just a thought.....
I know the group I was installing Supers for was bench loading the APG to the 522 (DVR) prior to releaseing them to the techs. This would save 15 to 20 min. in the field.
Just a thought.....

Yep, We're doing the same thing with the DVR units. I'm sure there's legal ramifications of getting new software to load standard IRDs..

KS opened up for points, so I'm up here picking up slack. They haven't QC any jobs in a few weeks, so I'm going to cover a couple of their techs so they can QC full time for the week..

It's REALLY nice being able to put up a phaseIII and provide locals..

Later.
