Hi I am a newbie to this forum and to TiVo and Directv in general. I have always had digital cable and have been happy with it but yesterday made the decision to switch to Directv with TiVo. I bought a three room system from PC Richard here in North Jersey and they are VERY agressive in outselling their competitors...good for me!
Their offer was a FREE three room Directv system with two RCA DVR40's or one RCA DVR80. The question is a new subsciber (I plan on purchasing the Premier package with NFL Sunday ticket) should I opt for two of the three receivers with TiVo or just one receiver with TiVo? The issue is obviously two 40gb vs. one 80gb. I am leaning towards the one 80 but I'm not sure.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
THANKS!

If you would like to have more storage in the DVR's in the future then I would go for both the 40 GB Tivo's because you have twice as many DVR's. You could upgrade the hard drive yourself in one or both.

As long as they throw in a triple LNB dish.... :D
DirecTV's DVR fee is $5 per account no matter how many DirecTiVos you have, and that fee is waived if you have Total Choice Premium. In addition, if you know what you are doing, you can easily upgrade the drive from 40GB to 160GB for 120 hours of recording time. I can get a Samsung 160GB for $89 (free standard shipping).
It also depends on your household. I do a lot of time shifting, so a DirecTiVo is a must. My mom just watches "whatever's on", so a DirecTiVo would be wasted on her.

I originally purchased a single 40GB DTivo for the Living room........but I like it so well, I bought another one from Ebay for the bedroom......Having two DTivos gives me 80GB of storage and the flexibility of having ALL the great Tivo functionality in two rooms.......and the Tivo service charge does not increase for additional units.
I suggest going with 2 40GB units.

Mark, won't he need a 4X8 or 5X8 switch "thrown in," too?
2 DTiVos + 1 STB = 5 inputs

It's one of my standand buy-lines... get a Triple LNB dish. It's partially because it's cheaper to get it at the time of install instead of later, it gets you HDTV ready, and has a built-in self-powered four-output switch. But, yes, he would also need a second switch hooked in.

In addition to being able to upgrade both at a later time, I would take the 2 and "teach" them different sets of preferences. With 2 units one could be told we have a preference for children's programming, the other could focus on sports and prime time network shows, and then I would have more 'Suggestions' to choose from when the kids are in bed. "Let's see, there's Barney, Clifford, Queer Eye, Sesame Street, Yu Gi Oh..." Ugh.
Of course, I'd really need 3 boxes given the opportunity. My wife and I are constantly adding 'Thumbs Up' or 'Thumbs Down' to programs the other has already rated.

Thanks for the clarification. It gets confusing (at least for me) to keep clear and what is needed for what, i.e. Dish 300, Dish 500, single lnb, dual lnb, twin lnb, triple lnb, legacy lnb, oval dish, round dish, dish pro... yada, yada, yada. :scratchin :new_Eyecr
