View Full Version : Question about Plasmas & Dish
I just bought myself a Plasma 42' TV and connected it to my Dish receiver with a S-Video Cable.... However, the picture isnt as clear as it was with a regular TV (at least when you sit close).... is this normal??... Thx in advance
Yes, it's normal for Dish to look worse on a larger high end display...
The compression of channels is seen more on larger screen, and the upconversions down by the tv enchances errors even more...
Would the same thing happen if I sit up close with a DVD Player or a 4DTV receiver??

Is your plasma an HD model? Why are you using S-Video when Component or DVI connections provide a much better picture? You can't feed your plasma 720P or 1080i through S-Video. You are treating your plasma panel like a low end TV set.
your feeding your Plasma a 480i picture with crappy S-Video. It has made to display 480p or higher. Stop feeding your digital TV an analog signal and things should look a little bit better. If it is an HDTV then feed it an HD signal. That is what is designed to show you, not analog or SD digital.

If all you have is S-video on your Dish, get a really good S-vid cable--it can help SOME.

Is your Plasma Standard Definition, EDTV, or HDTV? Do you have an HDTV Dish receiver? 811's and 921's have a DVI output which is superior for a fixed pixel TV such as a Plasma, DLP, or LCD. If you have a SD or EDTV plasma without DVI the next best thing is Component Video.
But in my experience...Big screen TV's generally emphasize the crapiness of crappy SD feeds. Non-HD or HDTV...Big screens generally amplify the garbage and it is definitely more noticeable the closer to the TV you sit.

To get the most out of your display you need either the 6000, 811 or 921. You need to run at least 480p (811/921), 720p if you have a 720p HDTV or 1080i if your set is 768p (let it do the scaling). You also have to optimize the picture (i.e. less sharpness and noise reduction, edge enhancement, etc) for satellite. Sets usually come optimized for analog cable.
