Type 1 is aluminum. Evidently the Typs 2 is somewhat lighter than the Type 1. The Type 2 is manufactured by Channel Master. It uses the standard 2 3/8" pipe that P*, Starband, and DirecWay uses. The Type 1 uses a harder to find and smaller 2" pipe. Some subs have complained that the type 1 dish has warped on them, but I do not have first hand knowledge of this.

Type 1 is actually foreign made and made of steel and not of aluminum. The early Sony SD-1 DSS (DirecTV) dishes were the only dbs dishes that had aluminum pans. With the SD-2 and the SD-3, Sony switched to steel.

I thought the type 1 metal ones were lighter than the fiberglass/plastic ones. I like the type 2 because they seem more strong, wont ding easily, the switch can be put on the back of it unlike the metal one and you dont have to worry about warpage.

My mistake. I meant stamped steel. Most C-Bands were aluminum or fiber.

In working with them every day, I tend to like the Type 1 dish better except for the smaller pole size. They seem easier to set the skew and align to the satellites than the fiberglass Type 2's. There is a newer version of the Type 1 out that the LNB arm only has two bolts from the bottom holding it on a cast aluminum bracket rather than the older one that had four bolts from the side through another stamped steel bracket. The newer Type 1's are pretty nice to work with. I really think the Type 1's are a bit lighter because of the heavy back plate of the Type 2.
