tv,vcr, directv and dvd recorder

I am trying to hook up all of my equipment and am about to go nuts. I have all working except the dvd can not communicate with my tv. I know it is something simple but don't know what. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

How do you have everything connected? How many inputs on the TV?
