When I first got Dish with a 522 receiver I purchased a Terk TV-42 Clip On/Dish Mount Amplified Antenna. It worked great for the first week or two then one day all I could see was snow on all three channels. I had some signal but not a lot. I know you are not to have the Receiver on when you use OTA but it does not matter what I do I still did not have signal. Then out of the blue one day my son was watching a local via the OTA, maybe he is doing it. Any ideas is the Terk TV-42 a waste?

Sounds like a connector issue, especially if it works intermittently. Unscrew the connectors at the diplexors inside as well as the IN/OUT's on the back of the dish, look inside for corrosion or obstructions, then reseat them tightly.
Being that it works intermittently, it is probably just not making good electrical contact.
