I was curious if some here could tell me what you think the best antivirus software is and what your using. I have Norton now but it's about to expire. So I thought I'd see what some of you recomend. Thanks!

When a customer of my shop can't afford or doesn't want Norton, we recommend AVG from grisoft.

I use Norton Inturnet Security and have been very please. Have used Macafee too but never really liked it.

WIth the Security package you get email spam filtering, parental control, popup blocking, and others along with teh virus control. IT has all worked very well for me. YOu can get teh 2004 version on Ebay for about $20.00 new in package. Great deal if you don't want to shell out $60 for the 2005 release with little adds. Just watch teh buyer you buy from and you will be fine.

Norton. The college I went to had a perpetual license for all students (even after leaving) for Norton AV. It's the Corp. Edition, so it doesn't come with the fancy interface and all the bells and whistles. Just an AV scanner.

I've always like Trend Micro. Have it on both computers.

I'll second that one! I have used PC-Cillin for years and am happy to say been virus free for the entire time. Knock on wood.

I was using AVG, but went back to Norton Antivirus. The current version also includes a firewall, so if you decide to use NAV 2005 and have ZoneAlarm, you may have to uninstall ZA. Symantec says in their Readme that came with NAV 2005 that there is a conflict with older versions of ZA and they do recommend that either you upgrade to the latest and greatest version of ZA or else....uninstall ZA from your PC.

The bad part was when I installed NAV 2005, Windows XP Security Center listed that "You are having at least one firewall on". So I checked and guess what? All three....Windows Firewall, ZA, and Internet Worm Protection (aka Norton AV 2005 firewall) were running at the same time.

Don't waste your time w/ anything but Norton..(Symantec). It's the best..bar none!

Surprising that no one has yet to recommend McAfee. I have been running McAfee for three years now without problems.

Hmmm, not everyone appears to agree:

Norton is in desperate need of a re-write. They've one-plussed their code to death to the point that you can't cleanly uninstall and reinstall.

When it works, it all works well together and that is why I've bought their software over the years - and just bought a 3-pack of the Internet Security suite. But what I had to do to get my 3 computers upgraded was NOT nice. I tried uninstalling the previous differring version of various Norton pieces (some had the firewall, some didn't) and it still wouldn't install until I went to their website and got instruction on how to REALLY clean out old versions.

Firstly, new versions should *never* conflict with old - since you wrote all versions of the software, you should be able to upgrade easily!

Second, you should NEVER have to instruct someone to go into Program Files/Common Files/etc and manually delete files - VERY dangerous.

They need to clean up their act and *finish* their software. Like I said, when it works, it works very well and, as a suite, I like it but for someone who doesn't have a 'guru' around, it could be pretty hairy.
