A friend who is a mechanic is opening his own shop. He asked me what software he needed to keep everything in order (income, expenses, taxes) and I suggested QuickBooks Premier Home & Business (2005) and advised him to check with a CPA first before he invested in any sofware.

Are there any other packages out there that he should know about - anything specific to his line of business - an auto repair shop?

Any suggestions w/b appreciated.

A few Playboy centerfolds should be helpful

I had some extensive use with Peach Tree a few years ago. It took me a while to learn it for some of the more advanced features beyond your basic accounts payable and accounts receivable. I’ve never used any other accounting software package other then Peach Tree, but I’d definitely look in to it. Sorry I can’t be more help Nick, but it’s been now over three years since I last used it, and don’t remember much other then I was really impressed and it was MUCH easier doing CPA work on Peach Tree, then by hand.

I used Acc-Pack for a couple of years but switch over to Quicken two years ago. My own CPA likes Quicken and approves of it.

Another advantage is that many banks now support downloading of statements directly into Quicken.

Be aware of Quicken trying to strong arm banks to use a new file format for downloading statements by not supporting the old qif format. Many banks have flatout refused to support it because of the licensing costs associated with it.

There are several software packages for the automotive field that are very nice.
He should ask his Snap-on Dealer about Shop Key Management software.
It does stuff that quick books can't..........
