About 5 weeks ago I posted questions about buying and installing a 721.

This post is about the current status.

I received and installed my first 721 (thanks to everyone here who helped with their suggestions), and it worked fine for 3 days until various problems began occurring.

Eventually, because of hard drive problems (“Hard drive has failed”), lost recordings and timers, etc., I returned it and received a second 721, which had worked fine for 1-2 weeks.

This morning, while the 721 was turned off, I noticed consistent hard drive noises being emitted by the 721. Since the machine is near my computer … where I spend much of the day … I couldn’t ignore the noises, so I turned on the TV and was greeted with the “Hard drive has failed” message. Eventually it did a complete re-installation of the system and copied a new drive image, after which it seems to be operating normally, except that all of my recordings and timers were, of course, deleted.

Because of suggestions on this board, I decided to call Dish Network and go on record as having a problem with this 721, so that if the problems continue, I should be able to get a THIRD 721.

While the E* tech would not admit that my problem is a known problem, he did say that “hard drives fail”, and E* plans to download an update that will defrag the hard drives and “put the bad boxes at the end”. He said that the release is 1 or 2 updates down the road.

When the 721 works, it is a good machine, but it definitely has reliability issues.

As I write this, I am listening to the 721’s hard drive making a lot of noise.

Even with all its quirks, my old DP7200 is looking better and better.

I had the 7100 from 1999-Jan 2004. In the first 3-4 years I had various problems with the software and setup that probably ate up 20 HOURS of my life. The last two years I had no problems. With the 721 which I got in April of 2004, I think I'm up to 20 MINUTES. The big difference though is that I think the capabilities of the 721 that I USE are much better than the 7100 and I have NO regrets about selling my 7100 and buying the 721. Hopefully, you will get a unit without these problems so that you can enjoy it.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having so many problems. The only problem I had with my 721 was that the HD died after 4 months. Other than just the infrequent freezes or reboots, it is definately a much better machine than my 501 or a D* TiVo. Good Luck.

As long as Echostar continues to use Maxtor drives in their DVRs, this will always be a problem.

Lyle what is it about the Maxtor's that are not good? Do they get bad sectors easily?

I don't know the exact technical reason why Maxtors suck. All I know is I've been working IT for many years now, and I've worked with Quantums, Seagates, Western Digitals, and Maxtors (and probably some other brands), and about 90% of the crashed hard-drives I've ever seen were Maxtors. And Maxtor is what E* uses.

For my money, I like Western Digital. I've had a handful of them, they're relatively inexpensive, and I've never had one of mine crash on me.

I've had very good luck with Seagate and Western Digital myself. I don't recall any real issues with the two maxtor's that I once had. If I recall, Maxtor is just about one of the cheapest priced HD on the market. Thanks,

John

If I am not mistaken, my 501 has a seagate. My 721 had a maxtor, and it crashed after about 4 months.

Other than what I've seen on satellite forums, I've never seen a higher than usual failure rate for Maxtors. Actually, personal experience has shown a higher rate of failure of Quantum and WD. IIRC, I don't believe I've ever had a Maxtor fail on me.

Personally, I think it is something about the way the Dish mainboard and/or disk controller interacts with these HDD's that cause such a high rate of failure.
