I was looking at 522 receivers on ebay, and was suprised at how low the prices on them are. Why are they selling for so little (about 150 seems to be the average.

I have read posts here in the past that Dish won't activate a 522 unless it's leased from them. Do a search here on 522 to find out more.
That is about what they are worth, and you will have trouble activating one on an existing account. :)

Pretty much stay away from 522's on ebay, won't be able to activate it some folks got away with it but it's pretty much impossible to do. Notice on each of those auctions they clearly state it's the buyers responsibility to verify with dish if you can activate the rcvr. and they usually make it very clear. most other auctions usually don't find too much on them.

Where are these 522's coming from?
Aren't they all distributed as lease boxes?

most likely they are retailers that are selling the boxes they have

Bob H - you better hope that they're still activating them with your contact. Otherwise, people will be really mad when they find out they have a paper weight. Plus they better hope that Dish codes this correctly so that they aren't asked to return the "leased" box if they quit Dish or need a new box because it dies for some reason.

I advise EVERYONE to buy only brand new unopened receivers and check with my contact before buying.
its worked for abunch of posters.
