HELP ME! My computer is slower than ever! I Have Windows XP Home SP1. What are somethings I could do to speed up my computer with out buying hardware. I Mean it is only about 2 months old 80g Hard drive, 256 Ram. If there is anything else you need to know ask me!
Thanks!

Mo' RAM. I wouldn't run XP on anything with less than 512K. With the price of RAM what it is, I run my desktops with a gig.

256MB isn't bad (not great tho).

To me, the relevant point is "slower than ever". That's the prime complaint for machines brought into my shop. It's almost always viruses, malware, spyware, etc.

I agree - get that system scanned with some good software.

256mb is the bare minimum for ram on an XP machine. Another reason it may be slower than ever is because more programs have been loaded. Remember any icon next to the clock is a running program sucking up your memory.. Another thing you can do JohnGFun is to turn off all the windows animations. Right click on my computer,, go to advanced then select performance,, you can customize there. The more options,, the more memory that XP is going to utilize.

Add more RAM and scan for spyware. Personally I run with 1 gigabyte of RAM and I'm looking to add another half gigabyte, then again I do a fair amount of video/photo editing so I need it a bit more. Recommended anti-spyware programs would include Ad-Aware and Hijack This.

I would scan for spyware using AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) and Spybot: Search and Destroy (http://www.spybot.info/), defrag the page file (http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pagedefrag.shtml), and defrag the hard drive.

More memory will help too.

It all really depends on what you do with it and what is running in the background.

More memory will help if your computer swaps alot. What type of swap space usage are you seeing?
Have you defragmented your drive recently?
Do you run antivirus software?
Have you ran any type of spyware removal programs?

Another little trick I used on a friends computer that was running very slow was to go into control panel/performance and maintenance/see basic information/advanced/performance/settings/advanced/virtual memory/change
The minimum size should be set so that the actual ram and virtual memory equal at least 500 meg, so with 256 meg of ram it should be set at least at 250. The maximum should be set for at least 700 to 800 meg, and if your hard drive is big enough at least a gig. My friend is very happy with the performance gain with his computer. He already had 512 meg, and was still getting bogged down.
