I had given up to the extent that I called DirecTV and inquired about coming back. I was halfway through the procedure with the rep when he found out that I couldn't get a Tivo free with installation until April '05, six months after I had my last one.
He said I could buy one from Best Buy or Circuit city and do my own installation at my own expense. I told him, no thanks, I'll wait.
This was before my 2.07 upgrade and so far so good with 2.07, so maybe it's a good omen that DTV prevented me from switching back.
