well i got a DVR about a month ago, 510 i think, but they never told me you couldnt Record something and watch something else, so i called Dish to ask how and they told me i need a 7 something and i forget which, but anyway the guy told my mother Dish dont carry them and to call some place close to me in Ottawa called Calloways or something, i was just wondering why dont Dish carry it?

I assume you are not a new customer? Did the installer leave your old receiver hooked up? You can connect two receivers to one TV.

You CAN watch a previously recorded item while recording another, but unless you have a dual tuner (eg. 721) you can't record one and watch another.
The 721 has been discontinued.
Your local retailer may still have some in stock. Dish is out.

No, basically the vcr is going to see what you see on the tv. You could certainly record somethign to the dvr and watch a recorded event and record THAT to vcr.

To just emphasize everything which has already been nicely stated in this thread...
The 510 only has a single tuner. That means it can only handle one actual satellite broadcast at a time. Whether you watch it or record it is immaterial; the limitation is the tuning. This is why it *is* possible to use the tuner to record something while you are watching something else which was previously recorded (since viewing previously recorded material doesn't use the tuner). The tuner in your TV or VCR are useless in this regard; they tune only analog cable, not satellite channels.
