EchoStar has shipped more than 500,000 personal video recorders (PVRs) to support its DISH Network service, the company reported last week.

Chairman and CEO Charlie Ergen said his goal continues to be making EchoStar the first company to sell 1 million PVRs in the market. TiVo, which also makes a PVR that is used by DirecTV and cable operators, said it has more than 380,000 users for its personal recorder service, and is considered No. 2 in the market behind EchoStar.

EchoStar manufacturers its own personal video recorder, called the DISH PVR 501, first introduced in 2001. EchoStar doesn't charge a monthly PVR fee for its PVR service, and the equipment can record up to 35 hours of programming.

Initial PVR efforts for EchoStar included its partnership with Microsoft's WebTV, in which the two teamed to produce a satellite receiver/personal video recorder called DISHPlayer in 1999. However, the relationship soured, and both are presently in court fighting over details of their relationship.
