Well In another thread i needed more memory so i added 512mb =768mb. well after that my programs started freezing up. Like MSN Messanger, Yahoo Mesg. ADAWARE Remover. Even "My Computer" Locks Up. Does Anyone Know What Is Causing This and how do i fix it?

That's a mystery to me. Did you add the "right" memory (right clock speed for that processor). I'd try an uninstall then reinstall of one of the applications - just to see if its corrupted. If it still locks up, then I'd bet its something in hardware causing a conflict. Probably the next move would be to remove the new memory and see if the problem is still there.

Rule 1 of technological troubleshooting:

If it used to work, undo the last thing you did and see if it works again.

If your memory chips are different speeds, the pc will drop down to the lowest. Try putting the 512mb chip in the slot where your 256mb chip is, and pull the 256mb ,, see how it runs. Try killing all un-needed programs that are running, each icon down by the clock is a program running that uses up memory. Once you have done that,, do a ctrl-alt-del and go to the performance tab, check to see if your cpu is maxing out,, you may have spyware running , ad aware doesnt catch everything

Not all PCs are 'smart' enough to switch down. Many will use the speed of the RAM that's in Slot 0.

As for trash tasks, we install AdAware, Spybot S & D, and Spywareblaster in my shop. It takes all 3 to be sure. ;)

Hmm. If "explorer" is locking up, there might be a different problem. One nasty piece of spyware I somehow managed to get redefined the explorer command so that it launched everything through it's own client program - in other words, you only go to Explorer through IT'S program and it was a ***** to get rid of. In the process of trying to remove it, I frequently ended up with situations where the PC would hang.

You may have spyware that is running and locking it up. What operating system are you running , you may want to go to microsoft.com , click on downloads and get the exec that will reload IE if you find that there is no spyware running.

I'm almost sure there is no spyware, because I do a scan everyday with 3 programs. I have Windows XP SP1.

Contrary to some folks belief, I would say get XP SP2. Also, if it is just the internet that locks,, try reloading. Here is a link for IE 6.0 SP1

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?productID=5A8BB164-5FC3-4BE5-95BB-BA73EEED1CA6&freetext=&DisplayLang=en

If you want to try something different, try Firefox instead of IE . I have used it and its okay but I still prefer IE.

Also clean out your temporary internet files and cookies, if you are going to start fresh. Did you get the chance to check performance of pc to see if anything is grabbing all your resources ?

I have SP2 and I have Zone Alarm and they have worked fine. Should I uninstall Zone Alarm?

I have found that ZoneAlarm Pro keeps disabling my windows firewall. I think the ZoneAlarm one is better, its more detailed and customizable.

I've got one from my ISP Charter Communications by F SECURE. It Has Firewall, Antivirus, and email antivirus scanning. It's not the greatest but its FREE to their 3meg. Subscribers. Anything FREE makes my happy  Ha.

So you think if I remove my Firewall it would work fine? Does the SP2 one have virus scanning?

The key is do not have TWO firewalls active.

A ZA version that recognizes SP2 is fine. Haven't heard of ZA disabling the SP2 firewall, but it sounds smart.

Does the XP Security Center tell you you've got a firewall up? If so, it's good.

No, my computer just flatout won't work. I don't have SP2 anymore.

Thanks Simon, everything is working fine, so I'll leave it alone.
