View Full Version : Does a 125Mbps wireless card work with a 54Mbps wireless router?
Hello. I have a question that no one seems to be able answer. I bet someone here could help me, as you all have been very helpful before. I have a 54Mbps wireless network, with a 802.11g Belkin Wireless DSL/Cable Gateway Router. I have a card in my desktop HTPC, but I would like to add one to my new laptop HTPC. The problem is that I can't figure out if to add the new Belkin High-Speed Mode Wireless G Notebook Network Card (part # F5D7011), which runs as at 125Mbps in "turbo mode" or the regular 54Mbps card from Belkin? Can I acheive 125 speed off of a 54 router? If I take it the laptop, say to Starbucks or any coffee house, what speed do they offer with their free wireless network? would I be better off with the faster card, even if I can only get 54Mbps at home? Thanks alot for your help in advance! :)

You wont achieve the "turbo" unless both the router and the PC support it. If bothare 802.11g complaint though you should be able to get a connection supporting the fastest speed that is supported by BOTH devices.
It looks like Starbucks is only wireless B speed. How about other national chains with free wireless internet? what speeds do they offer?

Mostly, you're only going to see 802.11b in public hotspots. Several reasons - cost, range, reliability, and, last but not least, a cheap bandwidth throttle. ;)
Ok, thanks for your help! I got the 54G card, (same as my router) it was on sale for a super low price at CC, so I just had to have it. I checked out many of local hot spots and they only offer wireless B and some have regular G. I see no use in spending in extra money, if I can't get the top speed. Thanks again to both of you!
