So I am a current Dish customer. I want to get a dual-tuner DVR. From what I can tell since I don't want a HD recorder the only choice I have is the 721. And from my research the 721 seems to have quite a few issues. I don't want to wait until Jan. when maybe 522 will be available for sale.

As far as I can tell looks like I'm going to have to move to Direct to get my Dual-Tuner DVR that is reliable.

Does anyone have any other answers? Thought I saw 1 thread that said that if you tell Dish you are leaving they might allow you to get a 522.

Thanks,
Kevin

Both the 721 and 522 have issues. Both work pretty well overall.

Dunno why you HAVE to have a 2-tuner box, but you might be able to get a 522 if you're dead set against a 721.

many people are happy with their 721.
there are a few people on this board that are very vocal about their problems.
Remember, people rarely post when things are going fine. They post A LOT if they have troubles

The 721 has been extremely reliable in my experience. Don't forget, you can get a somewhat one-sided view by reading the comments in forums such as this one, because people aren't taking a lot of time posting messages that say "My service is great, no problems at all, it recorded everything I told it to with no glitches!" It's just natural, people post their problems and solutions here. An unknown number of people aren't posting because they aren't having problems.

I am one of the 721 troubles, and currently the 522 appears worse:(

You can buy a 522 on e bay, brand new never activated, and I have a contact who can activate it for you. E mail me hallerb@aol.com

direct tivos appear bto be more reliable and have better features.

I like my 721. I've owned it since it first came out. I had only a few minor problems that were all correctable. The two tuners make a big difference.

I've had my 721 for a year now. I purchased a re-conditioned one on E-bay and it arrived DOA, however Dish replaced it the next day and it's been EXCELLENT since then. Sure, very minor issues, but overall a very satisfying experience....I'm even considering getting another 721 or a 921 as soon as I decide to run another cable through attic hell or buy a DPP44.

The DPP44 when combined with DishPro Separators is indeed a wonderful device.
