I have a DirecTV Tivo that occasionally will give us a black and white picture. Even the guides are shades of gray. If I changed channels back and forth or rewind it will snap back to color. This happens perhaps a couple of times a week. Any ideas why this is happening? I have had the Tivo since May.

Unfortunately, it is a normal occurrence among all DirecTiVo Series 2 models. I experience once it a while on my DTiVos. Usually happens when changing channels or accessing menus. Best thing to do is as soon as it goes black and white, leave in on that channel until it clears up, then wait an additional 15-20 seconds then continue on. There is a fairly large thread in the DirecTV with TiVo Forum at the TiVo Community Forums entitled ‘DirecTiVo Loss of Color’ with many reports of this happening. There really is nothing you can do. Some receivers will exhibit this some won’t. Only thing would be to return the unit and replace it with another one and hope it doesn’t happen again, but it probably will. It’s being blamed on a faulty graphics processor.

Yep. My B&W problem just appeared again over the weekend. I just do a restart which fixes the problem for a few months.

If you are using an s-video cable, make sure it is tightly connected.

The cabling has nothing to do with it, it is most likely a hardware defect.
