View Full Version : A "mission"...

I just switched from Starband (satellite internet) to Comcast Cable Internet. I have a Starband dish both at my house and at my office. I used to take the Starband modem back and forth when necessary so that I had a connection at both locations. I have now lost that option. The "mission" should you decide to accept it  is to tell me how I can get my Comcast connection to work at the office, about 5 miles straight line from the house. I have available the mentioned Starband dishes and a slightly larger (4') Primestar dish that could be used to fabricate a two way communication link between the two points. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing being done successfully? Are there FCC limitations that need to be looked into? Should you decide to accept this mission, this message will not self destruct in five seconds and will float around the internet from now until forever.

You COULD (at your own risk since it's easy to detect and probably a violation of your TOS) try just plugging the cable modem in at your office if you've got cable TV there. I mean, the frequency should be physically blocked but if by chance it's not as long as you're on the same headend your MAC address should authenticate. Other option is Wi-Fi if you've got line of sight.

No cable at the office. I am familiar with the term Wi-Fi, but not the technicalities behind it. Any sources of good info? Feel free to elaborate.

With MarkA's proviso of line of sight, a 5-mile WiFi ain't hard to do.
