Does anyone know if there is a particular reason?

DirecTV DOES carry the NASA Channel, Its just not on their 101 satellite. You can find NASA on DirecTV's 119 satellite.

I don't have this whole satellite thing down yet. I know there are multiple satellites up there, but how do I get the broadcast? Do I need a special dish? Is this a pay channel? I do not see NASA on the channel listing on D* website. Thanks

Yes you need a special Eliptical Dish to receive NASA from DirecTV. The channel is free there is no extra charge.

Thanks Scott. I wonder what other channels I could get for "free" that I do not know about.

If you have an extra 18" regular dish lying around, you can set it up, aim it at the 119 position and combine the feed with the 101 line using a 4x or 5x multiswitch. This will accomplish the same goal as setting up an 18x24 dish AND give you slightly increased signal strength over the 18x24.
