My mother-in-law's PC crapped out last week and wouldn't boot. I managed to convince her to buy a new PC, however, we needed to recover her data. The hard drive from the crapped out PC works fine. She just got the new PC today.

I put her old hard drive (was a Win XP boot drive) into my PC at home and can access most of the folders EXCEPT her My Documents folder in her user directory.

I have no idea where to turn to try and get this data now. I get and "Access Denied" error. Adding her username didn't seem to work and I am an administrator on the machine. I have a feeling this may be an NTFS issue and I'm not sure how to get around it or where to look for help.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated.

you need to go to properties of the folder and "take ownership" then once you own it you can do normal stuff.

BTW, couldn't you have just fixed your Mother-in-law's old computer? If it was a boot error, it was probably something with the MBR.
