View Full Version : E* posters vs. D* posters (Slightly off topic but I beg for mercy!)

Risking the ire of the “Overlords” I mean “Moderators” :D , I would like to make an observation/pose a question comparing the forums dealing with E* vs. the forums dealing with D*. Whenever I log on, I always like to see how many folks are looking at the E* and the D* forums. Almost 100% of the time there are far more people on the E* forum (same at Satguys). I wonder why? The D* forums are talking about (IMHO) opinion fairly mundane subjects – “So when is D* going to drop their price on the HR10-250?” (I wouldn’t mind an answer on that one!) or lots of “Network feed” questions. Nice but a tad bit boring for my tastes. You get over the E* side of things and things really get revved up. “OMG, MPEG 4 is coming, throw your boxes in the moat” or “E* must buy Voom or both are dead”, or “Billionaire Charlie is a fool!”, etc. Much more lively and entertaining. And without a doubt, hands down, better personalities. From outstanding helpful folks like Jason, to epic battles between Bob H and Bill R, then Garypen’s extremely sharp wit (!), back to Nick the Main Curmudgeon, the Native American Potentate, and finally Chris’ fair and calming hand (who is the adult around here anyway?!) And to all of the other outstanding folks who contribute. Has it always been this way? Have the E* subs always been this dominate with DBSTalk? Are the E* subs more passionate or is it due to the fact D* serves it's subs better than E* (thus the passionate posts from E* subs). Just pondering over probably one too many beers….

Dish Network is a little goofy, just like their customers.

They encourage it with their Charlie Chats, keeping Ergen front and center and in the sights of the interested viewers. The design of their system is more open to those who want to peek under the hood and discuss new uplinks (and even if E* doesn't like it, they are not as obsesive about their "secrets" as D* has been).
Despite being the #2 satellite carrier (by only a couple of million people) they have more going on to talk about. Six ACTIVE satellite locations with more to come. 151 ACTIVE locals markets with more to come. Plenty to talk about. Even the E* negative news is big (such as D*'s exclusive NFL contract and the CSN Chicago problem). There just seems to be more to talk about.
What has D* done lately? Promised to add FSS satellites (like 105 and 121 already in the E* network). Added a few HDs (and that is good). Added a few local markets. (OK, D* jumped from 64 to 130 while E* jumped from 70 to 151 over the same 15 months.) Extended the NFL deal. Have they done anything that wasn't discussed in both D* and E* forums? :D
Do D* forums discuss E* as much as we seem to discuss D*? :D

I was wondering when Bob H would pop in.... :-)
Look at the bright side, these conversations definately keep me coming back. Without them, I'd only check this forum out when I had a problem, instead of DAILY at the moment. I learn something from this forum ALL the time....it is very educational!

Yes, I do believe that Charlie with his chats do generate some personal interest in the systems. Dish had been known for coming out with things first before DirecTv.

Maybe they need to slow down and get them working first for a change?

Well then in my mind it seems Charlie deliberately decided to involve his Customers emotionally. Good, bad, or ugly; any publicity is good publicity. Gotta give it to him. It is not often consumers get this emotionally involved in a product. Very much harkens back to the days of Chevy vs. Ford vs. Mopar. Of course the technical issues definitely have an impact. It seems to me D* does not want their Customers nearly as involved (especially if you take TiVo out of the mix). Two totally, yet to date, successful business cases. Gotta love it!
