View Full Version : HD System deals
Normally I'm able to resist temptation, but this deal with the HD TV monitor and a 921 for $999 may just be too good to pass up. Any caveats other than the following:
1. 921 has some "issues"
2. 921 is not MPEG4
Additionally, I'd like to confirm whether or not the OTA tuner will do SD channels.
Thanks in advance!
The 921 OTA tuner will pick-up analog, digital, & digital HD channels.
You might want to do a search. Some people prefer one TV over the other.
If I remember correctly, the HDTV's that E* sells would only work with a E* HD STB, I don' t know if that's still a requirement or not, you might want to check that it's it a concern to you for the future.
You need to be aware the system comes with only 1 remote for the 921 there is no remote for the TV. Seeing they are RCA manufactured TVs you might check on service availability. These are not RCA model # TVs these are specifically made for DISH and are not serviced by DISH. You already seem to be aware the 921 will be a boat anchor in 2 years or less due to MPEG4. :)

My TV works without a Dish STB connected to it.

OK, I was just going by memory and from the E* web site on this page: http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/products/system/index.shtml there is this line: †Monitors must be connected to a DISH HD receiver to display HD programming.

I seem to remember that the TV will work but the HD inputs don't work with anything but the Dish Receiver. I may be wrong on that.

I have the 34" monitor and it works just fine through DVI and component with other input sources...there is no restrictions.
They never implemented that restriction (and decided they never will), the "dish" TV's will work with any HD source.
Just so you know, I had to get a second UHF Remote so I could control the TV, Not too many universal remotes work the ECHOSTAR brand name. I tried the RCA codes, but not all functions worked. I think many people prefer the 34" but I have the 40" rptv, it is comparable to my Misubishi in pic quality, the Dish tv made a nice secondary HDTV for me.

I noticed that Radio Shack handles Dish remotes.
Thanks for your insights!
The 921 OTA tuner will pick-up analog, digital, & digital HD channels. So the only real issue here is whether or not Dish continues the policy of charging for locals guide information even if you don't want their version of the locals. My locals are 50ALM away, but I get excellent OTA reception including a Pax local (apparently a must *not* carry with Dish). I also have "basic basic" Comcast for high speed Internet access ($1.49 more than high speed Internet alone due to the combination discount) so I don't need any more locals feeds.
Thank you for your help.

I am not an expert, but it appears to work on IR. I cannot turn the TV on from another room. But my point was, I couldn't fine a remote that had codes for Echostar and none of the RCA codes worked. Neither did THompson. I hate learning remotes, so that was not an option for me.

FYI the Dish Network TVs currently available are nothing more than rebadged RCA Scenium TV sets, model D40W135D for the 40" rear projection (might be off on the model number) and I can't seem to recall what the model number is for the 34" but it is a Scenium as well.

Don't forget that SD can also be tuned with the built-in TV tuner (assuming you hook up a Coax). Plus, the TV (at least the 34"), has dual NTSC tuners for the PIP junk.
As usual, PIP can't be used on any HD sources.

From what little specifications that are readily available, it appeared that the Dish model only has one of each input (DVI, component and S-Video) and no mention of tuners.
Thanks for the heads up!
What do you use as a remote control for your monitor?
In a fit of boredom, I decided to try and find the documentation for the similar RCA 34" monitor. I visited RCA's website and searched for HD34. The first result was a link to the PDF for the Dish Network HD Monitor User's Guide!

In response to kzosat's admonition about a second remote, the book says that remote code 742 on a Platinum Pro will drive the Dish monitor. If this is not the case, I'd like to hear about it.
Apparently this is a full-blown and fully functional HD monitor. My sense is that the monitor alone is worth the dollars that Dish is offering the system for. Now all I have to do is find someone at Dish that will offer me the 34" direct view. According to my dealer, the Sacramento distribution center says they only have 40" models.
My interest in the 34" monitor is primarily based on size. The monitors appear functionally identical (except maybe the convergence stuff). That and if I'm going to go projection/projector, it will probably be an LCOS or top-flight DLP.

Ok, just received TV #2 - Geometry is much better. The Picture makes it to the sides and is realatively straight. Overscanning too much, but I can probably get that from the service menu....
Now the sharpness. It's not uniform across the screen. The middle is way sharper then the sides. It's not too noticable with normal viewing, but you can really see it when the EPG is up.
I'll set up the tripod tonight and try to take some pictures....
I'll also take a look with the Video Essential Patterns.
So I must ask... Are they all like that? Perhaps it'll be better when it warms up a bit.
Think I've spent too much time looking at $2,500 DLPs before snagging this $500 tube.
