If I get my 80GB HDD and WinXP upgrades for Xmas, I need your advice. I currently have an 8.4GB HDD, so there is some hope that my BIOS will support an 80GB drive.

Is my BIOS ready for an 80GB HDD (Don't ask about WinXP. I meet all requirements to upgrade)

Most likely yes. The problems start coming into play when you reach capacities greater then 137GB (I believe that is the cutoff point off the top of my head). Anything larger then that either needs LBA48 support or a bios extension installed. Native LBA48 support is the preferred method and makes life simpler since you don't have to install the bios extension and run off that. There is also a performance penalty for using the extension.
