It appears that Dish will be using an uplink center in Atlanta for Ka-band based on the following FCC application:

http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/servlet/ib.page.FetchAttachment?attachment_key=406475

Here's a summary of the application:

"This is an application for regular authority to operate a hub earth station and up to 100 remote terminals in conjunction with the AMC-15 satellite at the 105 W.L. orbital location, the EchoStar 9 satellite at the 121 W.L. orbital location, the ANIK F2 satellite at the 111 W.L. orbital location and the soon-to-be-launched IA-8 satellite at the 89 W.L. orbital location. Grant of this Application will assist EchoStar in conducting regular operations from each of the requested orbital locations. In addition, the earth station will aid in EchoStar’s efforts to integrate its Ka-band FSS licenses with its existing fleet of DBS satellites so that it can deliver additional video and other services to consumers. As a result, grant of this Application is in the public interest."

Does Dish currently have a center in Atlanta or are they leasing it from someone else?

I had previously seen info on Dish leasing ANIK F3 at 118.7 W once it gets launched in 2006 but this is the first I have seen mention of ANIK F2 at 111 W and IA-8 (Intelsat Americas) at 89 W. Curious there is no mention of AMC-16 at 85 W but Dish is lining up a huge amount of bandwidth. If in fact Dish has lease agreements for ANIK F2 and IA-8, I count 16 Dish orbital locations, 61.5, 83, 85, 89, 97, 105, 109, 110, 111, 113, 117, 118.7, 119, 121, 148 and 157.

The 100 remote terminals mentioned also raises some speculation. Could Dish use these to uplink HD locals directly from each city that Dish carries? In addition, the application does specifically mention broadband services.

I wonder if eventually they may want to use this for standard KU for another Spot Beam uplink?

The description of the remote terminals indicates they are less than 1 meter in diameter. I suspect that would be only for broadband terminals or receive. No video uplinking from them.

Ka. satellite internet this summer. Atlanta, home of former partner Starband's NOC. Is this all related?
