Picture quality

I don't know why but our older 508 receiver had better picture quality on our 32 inch TV than the 721 does. The 721 is ok, but the colors and channels were all so rich and brighter on the 508.

Do you still have your 508? You could hook it back up and make sure your mind isn't playing tricks. They shouldn't be much different in picture quality, and if they are, then I would say the 721 should theoretically be better (being newer tech).

Are you using the exact same Svideo cable?
