DirecTV launches digital recorder without TiVo
Thu Jan 6, 2005 03:27 PM ET
NEW YORK, Jan 6 (Reuters) - DirecTV Group Inc.(DTV.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday debuted its first digital video recorder using technology developed by News Corp. (NWS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) division NDS Group, raising questions about its relationship with TiVo.
The largest U.S. satellite television operator, controlled by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., currently sells digital video recorders using TiVo Inc. (TIVO.O: Quote, Profile, Research) developed technology, but a spokesman declined to comment on whether it will continue to sell recorders using TiVo technology.
"We'll support our existing TiVo customers," a company spokesman said. "But our core initiatives and new customer acquisition will focus on our new DVR."
Digital video recorders let TV watchers pause and record live broadcasts.
The combination of DirecTV's satellite service with NDS products, announced at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, underscores News Corp.'s ambitions to spread its technology across its portfolio of companies globally.
NDS (NNDS.O: Quote, Profile, Research) currently also develops similar technology for U.K.'s BkyB (BSY.L: Quote, Profile, Research) satellite TV system, run by Murdoch's son James Murdoch.
TiVo Chief Executive Mike Ramsay told Reuters in Las Vegas that the company will continue to offer TiVo recorders to DirecTV customers and is currently developing new products for the service.
Last June, DirecTV divested its stake in TiVo and stepped down from TiVo's board, fueling speculation that News Corp. would eventually dump TiVo. DirecTV represents TiVo's single largest pay television customer.
Since taking control of DirecTV, News Corp. has exerted its influence on the company, including installing a slate of executives including its chief executive Chase Carey, a former co-chief operating officer of News Corp.
Separately, DirecTV also announced a flood of new developments including a new set top box receiver and home network system that lets subscribers view video, digital photos and digital music from every television set in a household.
Shares of NDS rose $1.30, or 4.22 percent to $32.14 on the Nasdaq. DirecTV shares rose 10 cents to $16.10.
