A couple of weeks ago my Panasonic DVR-HS2 DVD Recorder started putting a black box on the screen. It occasionally has text/undisplayable character stream in it... never more than a couple of lines. I think that at the time I had an 811 as an input and have changed to a 921. I have another tv in another room hooked to a 301 that had the same box one time but it went away when I pulled the power.

The box is there most of the time but not there constantly. I haven't been able to see any logic to why it appears. The only consistent clue is that when the input is from the satellite receiver, the box disappears when the guide is on the screen.

I've tried pulling power, going into service mode and re-initializing, reformatting hard drive... nothing fixes it. I can't find any link to firmware updates, and I have an email in to Panasonic, but thought I'd check to see if anything like this happened to anyone out there since I suspect the trigger came from the Dish receivers.

Check to see if you have closed captioning turned on anywhere. Black boxes often appear with CC on. Just a thought.

Thanks, but I made sure that no CC is on anywhere. And I've disconnected the HS2 from the 921 and it still happens. I think something must have put it into some undocumented factory service mode. It was just strange that it happed on another TV, though briefly. If it hadn't, I would have just assumed that the HS-2 had crapped.

I occassionally see the same thing you describe, but in my case it isn't the satellite receiver - it's the TV.

When I unplug the TV (about 3-year-old 32" Philips) for a few seconds and then plug it back in, everything's OK. When this happens, the TV also responds VERY slowly to remote commands.
