View Full Version : Is DVI on a computer monitor different than DVI on a "television"?

I want to purchase a widescreen LCD display for my home office - the current frontrunner under consideration is Sony's SDM P234B, a 1920x1200 16ms display w/ "DVI" and analog inputs. I posed a question to Sony to ensure I could display a DBS' provider HD signal on the monitor (maybe Voom's, maybe I'll keep stinking E*, I dunno). Anyway - here is Sony's response:
"The Pin Configuration of the DVI-D Port of the SDM-P234/B PREMIERPRO 23" Wide Screen Flat Panel LCD Display is different from the pin configuration of the DVI Port of your Sattelite or Cable provider. So it is not possible to connect this display via the DVI port of your Cable Box."
Can someone explain this to me? There are different 'digital video interface' configurations running around using the "DVI"acronym? Does someone make a converter? Or should I just stop watching television 'on the job'?
Any help VERY appreciated...

this link and some study may answer my question...

I'm not sure, the study may help. It was my understanding that the 3 DVI configrations were "A" (analog) "D" (digital), and "I" (both). Most HD settops are "D", that's why that reply is confusing?????

Well, the plot thickens... the Sony doc and the Voom Motorola 550 set top doc state both are 24 pin DVI-D (not DVI-I, which carries analog too?). Now, if its because of HDCP ok, then I'll be quiet, but this latest response from Sony says "well, even if the pin configurations are similar, the "technology" is different so it won't work". But they don't say why, and being from Missouri I want them to "show me" why it won't work.
My second question:
Thank you VERY MUCH for responding to my note and getting me a real link to the real manual. In my research I did find one thing of interest... the DVI-D connection on the Premier Pro matches that of the Voom set top box... both are 24 pin DVI. And both provide analog inputs and outputs for audio signals. So I should be able to connect the Voom set top box to the Premier Pro...
And their response:
The DVI port of the Set Top Boxes cannot be used to connect to the DVI-D port of the SDM-P234/B PREMIERPRO 23" Wide Screen Flat Panel LCD Display even if the pin configuration is similar. The DVI port of the Set Top Boxes and the DVI-D port of the Displays work on different technologies.
So I am still unsure of the feasibility of this... and in looking at "HDTV ready widescreen LCDs" I cannot figure out what's different that would make them (HP L2335, Phillips Brilliance etc.) work and the Sony not work.

It sounds to me like Sony doesn't really know, so they're just saying "no" to cover their behind in case you buy it and it doesn't work.

Maybe I missed it in the specs , but it appears the Sony SDM P234B does not have HDCP . Without the HDCP the satellite box will not work, nor will and video dvi source other then a computer
