View Full Version : Hard Drive Test Problem
I am a new member of this forum with a new 921. I am seeing most of the problems that I am reading about here on the group. However I also find that when I run the Hard Drive test it starts counting down very slowly from 248 but it never gets lower than 244 after several hours. Is this normal or do I have a bad Hard Drive. It is a new unit and I can still exchange it under warranty.
Thanks, Jerry

I'm just a new user, but I would suggest that is not normal behavior.
I was curious about the usefulness of any hard drive utilities that may have been included in the 921's software. I found that one diagnostic test and ran it. It gave me a countdown from 249, ended around 243 (but it took a LONG time to complete) and then said it had completed the testing and found no errors.
Since it does not complete the test, or at least does not appear to, it makes me think that the diagnostic tool either does nothing, or doesn't finish completely. In addition, since it does not tell the user what it is doing or report on simple things such as disk fragmentation, bad sectors, or the like, it is not useful in any way. :nono2:

The diagnostic tool activates the hard drive's SMART diagnostics, and it can take a very long time if the disk is full or near full. Mine takes about 36 hours to run all the way through (which doesn't make much sense to me, as this is supposed to be the short version of the diganostics). I've never seen any indication on mine that my hard drive is about to fail, so it's probably normal.
Of course, there are other reports of the diagnostic taking seconds to run, so...

I have ran mine to try and fix minor issues and sometimes it takes a few minutes and other times it takes all night. Mine usually hangs on 248 for awhile. It would be interesting to know what might be stored on that sector or whatever is going on since several of us experience the hang on various sectors

Jreed, Welcome aboard. I have done the hard drive diagnostic test with both my receivers. Generally, it just takes a few minutes for the operation to complete. On occasion, it has taken forever for it to complete. In my checks, it really doesn't seem to matter if I have a lot of recored DVR events. I have no clue why there is such a difference in diagnostic times. It is a mystery kinda like the, "TeachRemote."
