To enhance television service and ensure the highest quality picture, EchoStar has deployed the Terayon CP digital streams management system from Terayon Communication Systems, a provider of broadband solutions.

EchoStar has installed the systems and associated equipment at its master uplink facility in Cheyenne, Wyo., which transmits programming to the company's satellites for broadcast to its subscribers across the country.

Jeff McSchooler, director of engineering at EchoStar, said, "In extensive testing of several products, the Terayon solution showed that its statistical remultiplexing technology gave us the picture quality we desired with the exceptional reliability we require."

I would guess that this is what they installed around January 1st to try and deal with the bandwidth scarcity due to "must carry".

If Echostar REALLY cared about picture quality they'd switch to an 8PSK DVB-based system and would swap all receivers out. And they'd broadcast at 720x480 (which is a SIMPLE improvement they could make in a few minutes with no additional equipment)

The rumor is that if the merger goes through, all Dish Network and DirecTV equipment will be swapped out for 8PSK receivers.

It's certainly pointless for them to start such a swap before the merger is approved or denied.
