View Full Version : Changes to font used for Guide?

I just noticed that sometime over this past week the UI for the guide on the 921 has changed. It appears that the font that is used is smaller. The impact is that the guide is much harder to read even on my 51" TV. I checked and the SW version has not changed. Any idea what could be up here?

Do you now see a yellow box around the text in the upper left corner of the screen? If so, your software has become corrupted and it can only be fixed by taking the download of the next version of software. If you don't see the yellow box around the text, then check your output settings - you may have slipped into 480p more from 1080i or something like that.

Mark, I was just wondering about your reply. If your software has become corrupt does the owner really have to wait on the next 212 (or whatever it's called) in a month or 6 months or whatever? Does Dish not have to some way to reload individual machines, maybe even by taking it in to a Dish dealer?
I'm a new owner and if this is the case it has me concerned.
Thanks

What's even sadder is that this bug has been around for the last 2 revisions.

Robert, currently there's no method in place to hit an individual receiver again to re-download the software, but if this were to happen to you, I might be able to help you out offline.
It's a very sporadic problem, usually affecting one of two people each software release.
I hope this is as simple as having changed the font in the menu-6-4 setup. I know I pick the small cursive, transparent background, "solid" yellow/cyan foreground, and black outline. (Quoted because it is translucent and translucent is transparent, another bug.)
A second possibility is use of window behind the guide vs. window in upper right. The behind window has larger lettering across the top vs smaller lettering in the upper left.
Either of these are simple compared to waiting for E* to give 212.
Per chance, you have an EDTV (480) and are operating it in 1080?

Mark,
I took a look at the guide this morning and it has a white box around the text in the upper left corner(not yellow). I also checked the the output settings and they are at 1080i(as expected). I tried the other settings 480p, and 480 and saw no difference in the guide.
I guess I'll keep an eye out for the next sw update and see if that has an impact.

Will - just to confirm...does it look like the pictures posted in this thread? http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=29479
If so, I'm sorry to say you'll have to wait for the next software download for it to revert back to normal.

The infamous "the entire UI is corrupted and we don't know why" bug, yes. The font changes, the spacing and layout become odd, and the screen borders become very plain. The guide has some extra space at the bottom and everything appears to be "shifted"; not particularly pretty.
My receiver is suffering from this now and has been since a few days after the current software release came out. I really do wish there was some way this could be resolved from either the Dish side or the user side. But I suppose all we can do is wait until a new software release comes out and hope it doesn't happen again...
