View Full Version : transmitter interference w/ Dish signal?
As some readers may recall, I have had ongoing problems with my Dishnetwork DP-301-010 and DP301-013 for a few months. Viewing 119 only, dual legacy LNB, good signal, picture freezes up for a fraction of a second, sometimes for a couple of seconds, very intermittently. We figured that it is probably LNB or cables, or buggy receivers. Not practical to get or borrow new receivers, and access to LNB is difficult until winter ends (in about 4 months where I live!). I have thought of another possible source of my problems. I live very close to a small commercial airport. Control tower is 1/4 mile away, terminal building with its wireless computer access points and other transmissions is 1/8 mile from my house, and a taxi stand is no more than a few hundred feet away (all hidden by woods, fortunately). There does seem to be some correlation between signal problems and activity around the airport, but I'm not confident in my observation. Could transmissions from these sources be the cause of my problems? Is there any kind of filter that I can install so as to block this stuff yet not interfere with the satellite signal?

If an airplane flies over you could notice a very brief blockage causing your problem. You should go outside and see if an airplane is flying over when you experience a problem.
I'm sure that the problem is definitely not caused by a plane physically blocking the signal. Again, is there a cheap filter that I might be able to buy at Radio Shack or somewhere that might block out unwanted interference?

I've never heard of such a filter.
AFAIK, the only RF from an airport that could be hurting you would be their radar (if any). However, radar would give you some pretty consistent patterns.
Having been a RADAR and Navigation repairman in the Air Force (quite a few years ago) and knowing a lot about current commercial RADAR and Navigation gear I seriously doubt that anything at a small commercial airport could be causing a problem (nor could anything like a taxi transmitter or any other broadcast or wireless signal). If you were located near a military base I would say that there could be a possibility that something they have could cause your problem.
My guess is that it is your installation and/or the fact that you must be in the far north (Canada?) based on your remark about having four more months of winter. How is your signal strength and do you notice a change when you are having problems?
