Can anyone help me figure out how to use a timer recording program for a vcr with Directv. I am trying to program a show to be recorded to a vcr. The show is on channel 610.
Make sure your receiver is on channel 610 and create a VCR timer to record the time slot you want.

when I set up the VCR for timing, it only allows me to type in 2 digit channel #'s. How do I type in 610?
You put your receiver on 610. Your VCR would be on channel 3 or 4 (which ever you chose when you you set it up).

can I then shut the TV off?

Ok, so i will have the Sattelite channel on 610 and enter either 3 or 4 in the timer program that the VCR asks for. I will be unable to watch another program I guess while recording.
It doesn't ask which channel to set it to. On the back of the VCR is a switch that allows you to choose channel 3 or 4. Whichever channel that switch is set to is the channel you need to program your VCR to record on. It doesn't matter which channel it's on, just that you program your timer for the channel that switch is set to.
With all due respect, you really should read the manual that came with your VCR.

You tune the channel through your satellite receiver, so you want to make sure to tune your receiver to channel 610.
You set the time you wish to record on your VCR. When it asks for the channel, you can either enter channel 3 or 4, whichever your VCR cable input is set to. Another option would be "Line" which would take the signal from your vcr's RCA inputs and provide you with a sharper recording.

You'll get better PQ if you record use the A/V connections between receiver and VCR. You will need to make sure the VCR is set to record from the A/V inputs. And, the VCR must be able to do timed recordings with that input.

That switch has nothing to do with recording. It determines what channel the VCR outputs at and is the channel you tune your TV to in order to see output from the VCR.
The VCR should be tuned to (or programmed for) whatever channel the DirecTV receiver outputs at. Or record from A/V inputs as other have suggested, which many VCRs label as channel L1 or LINE.
