I have my 501 connected to my TV via S-Video, my TV only has 1 S-Video port. Is there any way for me to hook up my DVD so I can utilize S-Vidoe?

you would need to add an s-video switch (ratshack ~$30-40) or an AV switching receiver to get more than one S-video input into your TV.
Yeah, Rob.
Don't be so spartan & get with the program. If you have a DVD & a PVR you should have a DD/dts HT system w/S-Vid switching!
;)
A switch will work, or what I do - swap the cables by hand! HTguy, not everybody's receiver has S-Video switching. My cheap Panasonic doesn't (of course Panasonic isn't very good - it was a birthday present last year)

Thanks guys, I guess there is no easy way. I did just realize that my tv as a second s-video jack but it is in the front. Way too easy for the kids to get it. Oh well.

www.mcmelectronics.com usually has S-Video switches for under $20.
Go ahead and use the one on the front and just tell the kids not to touch it:) Unless they are really little and can't understand you. That's why duct tape exists:)

Duct tape or Velcro, they both work:D

Can you hook up your DVD player with the S-video hook through the Dish (PVR 501) kind of like my VCR is hooked thorught the Dish?

I'm not sure. I'll have to give that one a try. Is there an 'S-Video in' on the 501?

I know the 501 comes with a S-video cable and it shows in the instruction on how to hook it

No svideo input... output only.

So how does my VCR work. I know I connect through the input. I don't connect any output to the TV. Does it then play through the coxial cable that is output through my 501 that is connected to TV?

It might help us if you said HOW you hooked it up.
I can think of a couple different ways to use both a 501 and a VCR on the same TV, depending on what you want ot do...

Have you tried the composite? You may not actually see that much difference.
Best Buy has a realatively inexpensive manual SVHS switchbox - $30 for 4 inputs.

Isn't that cruel and unusual punishment???
Also, don't the neighbors complain when the kids scream when you rip the tape off to put them to bed?

How do you think I get them to go to bed?
PS. I got the idea from my neighbor...:)
I have a similar situation, 1 S-video front 1 rear. I do have a A/V receiver that does S-video switching, but that means it needs to be on all the time, and even though it is a good receiver, figured why subject the video signal to possible degration (sp?)
Since I didn't watch movies more then once every few days I would just hookup my DVD to the front S jack. I would disconnect when done since my kids would touch. I did this up until recently when they both (3 1/2 and 2 years old now) know that they shouldn't touch that cable especially if they want to be able to watch Shrek or Jay Jay the Jet plane (their 2 favorites).
They used to be even worse with the IR emitter on my Dad's TV.
MrPete, I don't know what spartanrob meant, but I meant using duct tape to hold the cables in the socket so the kid can't pull them out.
You need to find a sense of humor... :D
The local WM just reduced their 4>1
svideo/composite/audio switcher from
29.95 to 20.00. Don't know if other
WMs did the same.

Same here Nick, I think I saw that last time I was at Wal-Mart. Can't be sure, though. It looks like a decent RCA (the brand) switch.
