View Full Version : E8 2nd Dish offer...any takers?

SOMEONE else must be taking them up on this offer to get the 2nd dish installed for FREE at 61.5 or 148. I just called to schedule and they will have someone at my house promptly, between 0800 and 1200...

...on Sunday September 29th.

Almost makes me grateful for the HiDef DVI/HDCP issue, since that caused me to delay my HDTV purchase anyway...so no hurry

I guess that's what you gotta live with if you want a free dish upgrade. September 29th is a LONG way away though.

I doubt that the regulators will consider such a schedule as meeting the second dish requirement.

Is the wait that long in all areas?

Dunno. I had mine done right after the FCC ruling in early April. Dunno how many people really want the Univision station in Sacramento.

I scheduled mine about a week ago for the San Jose area and
was given a date of June 24th which I thought was absurd,
but given that EvanS was quoted September 29th, it doesn't
seem so bad anymore.

When I questioned them about that being so far out they
said something about a letter going out to all about the offer
and so many folks taking them up on it. I never got any such
letter, but they repeated their assertion several times even
though I did not contradict them.

I had mine scheduled within a few days. Unfortunately 148 is where the other Houston locals are and there is too much forest in that direction to aim a dish at it. If only the other Houston locals were at 61.5, I've got a pretty clean shot at that. :(

You know I was offered NEXT day installation. There must be alot of people responding to those lettters.

I just called and ordered GR locals and was offered Monday 8-12. Not too bad.

I called on Monday and got the choice of June 2 or sometime in August. I chose June 2 (I think they had a cancellation).
Question: Once I have this installed (Detroit) what extra will I get? Can I get the distant locals?

I never got a letter.

You will get whatever locals for Detroit are at 61.5. I believve only one. But try our transponder God's web site.

They were supposed to come yesterday to install my 2nd dish but canceled on Sat because they are out of switches. Now I have to wait another 2 weeks

Dish called me up a few days ago to try and talk me out of my appointment to get the 2nd dish for locals. I suggested that they were trying to get out of their FCC agreement and the person only laughed. They said they wanted to be sure I understood what I was getting, a bunch of PBS and independents and Spanish stations. I told them I still wanted it.

I wonder if the FCC knows that they are doing this. I consider it customer harrassment. It certainly goes against the spirit of the FCC agreement if not the letter.

Tell them that it's not the principle, it's the money.....

What switch is used for the 61.5 free dish, and how much would the sw cost if purchased serarately? 2 IRDs now, 3rd IRD planned for HD in 12-18 mos..

Nick, with 2 receivers it would depend on what the installer had on hand and lnbs you have installed on your dish 500. If you have 2 dual lnbs, the installer could either replace your duals with a twin and cascade the 61.5 lines in with SW-21s (the wrong way), replace duals with a quad and cascade in 61.5 with 2 SW-21s (also the wrong way, but slightly better than the twin option) or replace your SW-21s with an SW-64 to bring in the 61.5 lines (the correct way). Same options basically if you have a twin LNB...

From what I understand (and any Dish Dealers feel free to correct me) you are supposed to get a SW-64 switch. Dish is paying the installers to put in a Sw-64 not some other switch.

If you don't get a sw-64 I would call Dish Network.

That's why my install was delayed, they were out of SW-64's. They are supposed to come this saturday. I will wait and see.

Dish was out Saturday, as promised. Installed my 2nd dish, checked all my receivers (4) and was gone in an hour. Everything is working great.

Well, DNSC is only obligated to get the add'l LILs from the free 2nd dish to the rcvrs the sub currently has going.

So they won't put in a SW-64 if the cust has only 1 or 2 rcvrs. It doesn't matter if you "anticipate" getting another rcvr or PVR721 someday.

But, having said that, some custs got SW-64s anyway even tho they weren't currently required. This contributed to the shortage and the bean counters must have figured out that it was costing too much so now they are clamping down.

Is there any way to tell if I have an SW64 switch?

Mark Lamutt

The SW64 is about 6"x8" with 6 inputs on one side and 4 outputs on the other side. If you don't have a switch, or something that is smaller than that, you don't have the 64.

You can also do a Switch checkup from your receiver. The Dishplayers can show it in the Multi-Dish switch summary page.

this is true - I have a 501 and 301 and I ended up with a sw21.

Also, and I'm not that up on the cascading of the different switches, my installer told me that to even use a sw64 I would need to deinstall my Dish500 TWIN and replace with DUAL lnb's (or the other way around...hell I dunno). Anyway he was saying the LNB I have doesn't work cascading with sw64.
But I ended up now with TWO Dish500's, my original with TWIN and the new one with one half of the DUAL populated.

I just did a switch check and it says I don't have an SW64 (i've got 4 receivers). Should I complain to Dish?

spartanrob

I called Dish last night, they said because I have a 500 as the first dish and a 300 as a second dish I don't need a SW64, I think I have a 34, he said this is correct. He also told me not to do too many switch checks or it will mess up my installation. Any comments?

Spartanrob, do you get the side slot channels (from your dish 300 pointed at 61.5 or 148) on all 4 of your receivers, or just 1 or 2 of them? If that's the case, you have 2 lines from a quad lnb cascaded with 2 sw21s going to those 2 receivers, and the other 2 lines from the quad going directly to your other 2 receivers. I'm pretty sure the dishpro lnbs and switches aren't available yet, so I don't think you have an sw34. Of course, I could be wrong...:D

Oh, and doing a check switch won't screw up your installation...not sure what the csr was smoking when he told you that...

spartanrob

I'm pretty sure I get my 61.5 channels on all 4 receivers, I will check when I get home tonight. I will also run another swich check and right down exactly what I have. Thanks for the help.

OK, this is what I got with my 2nd dish upgrade:

DP34-500 w/3 inputs
Port 1: DP Twin-2 - 110
Port 2: DP Twin-1 - 119
Port 3: DP Single - 61.5

What do you think?

I think that's the first I have heard of anyone getting DP switches and LNBs. I guess they are more than just vaporware after all.

Wow...spartanrob, I think you are the first to get the dishpro switch. Definitely the first reported here.

Thanks for the info. I'm still realatively new so I am going to assume that this is a good thing. If you have the time and patience, maybe you could give me the quick and dirty of the dishpro switch.

Thanks everyone.
