Cable giant targets children
The nation's largest cable company, which has about 300,000 subscribers in the Sacramento area, plans to unveil a new channel for preschoolers that will feature such iconic characters as Barney, Big Bird, the Berenstain Bears and Bob the Builder.
Dubbed the PBS KIDS Sprout, the network initially will be available - without commercials - to digital subscribers who have Comcast's video-on-demand system. The programs primarily will be shows that have previously been shown on PBS stations.
Once it goes into full operation this fall as a 24-hour channel, it will have sponsorship announcements between programs - similar to what's now seen on PBS stations - but not during episodes.
