View Full Version : THOUGHT ABOUT VoOMin'

OK, so I stated a while back that whoever got the Voom channels would be my next provider. I have been a customer of DISH in the past and I had a mediocre experience. However; I have a spouse I could sign up and get the new promos, after sitting down and doing some calculations, this is what I came up with....

Currently...

Comcast-$87.98(promo); $132.98(after 12 month promo)
-HSI
-Digital Silver Package w/ HBO and Showtime
-HD Pak with TNTHD, HBOHD, CSNHD, DISCHD, INHD1, INHD2, ESPNHD
-HD Locals
-Free install and free HD-DVR upgrade
-No Commitment

DISH-$105.98(promo); $148.97($138.97 after 3 month and $148.97 6 month promo)
-HSI
-America's Top 180 w/HBO and Showtime
-HD Pak with TNTHD, HBOHD, SHOHD, DISCHD, HDN, HDNM, ESPNHD
-Voom Originals
-HD Locals via off air antenna est. cost $100
-Installation and lease upgrade charges $518.99 (direct quote from DISH)
-SW44 $119.99, $100.00 61.5 install, $250.00 942 upgrade, $49.99 DHA)
-12 month commitment

Now, obviously, that puts the load to bear squarely on DISH's shoulders. I do concede that DISH has Voom now and that adds 10 channels of HD, but you are paying a premium of $18.33(SW44 and 61.5 divided by 12) plus $5.00 per month for the channels; for a total of $23.33 for 10 channels. Now split the 942 lease price up over 12 months and you get $20.83 per month. Add those two charges together for a total of $44.16 per month in addition to the already higher price of $148.97 and you get a grand total of $193.13 for the first 12 months. Subtract the discounts of $156 over twelve months, for an average monthly bill of $180.13 per month for the first twelve....

I just can't swing that... I love being an early adopter, heck I had a dvd player when there was like 10 discs on the market, but paying almost $200 a month for tv/hsi, is just out of control. DISH is now the HD leader but the price loser. It will be interesting to see if D* chokes the Voom channels up or if we start seeing them pop up on cable systems.

That's a lot, I don't have HD and I couldn't pay that much. Heck, stick with Comcast even with their yearly hikes.

Why are you including HSI for dish? You actually want Satelite internet? yuk...

Get eithor dsl for ~$30 or less or get basic cable with cable modem for $60 or less. Then choose your tv provider. Dish with Voom/HD should be less then $100.

I don't have HD but I do have dish network for a few alacart channels (superstations, fox waiver, sky angel). If I had an HD tv I would consider getting DISH with Voom.

My main choice for Tivo is Directv with Tivo DVR. The best choice of SD channels for the price. (around $50).

I figured in the cost of HSI because with Comcast tv service, I am currently getting a $10.00 discount for a cost of $42.99 per month for HSI. With DISH the minimum for the same service would be $52.99. As you see above, the comparable package to what I have and what I would need with DISH IS just a hair under $100. Factor in the cost of the 942 and the $220 for the Voom setup and it gets MUCH more expensive, that was my point.

This doesn't make any sense. Why do you need to buy a SW44, and pay $100 for the 61.5 DISH? Why are all those fees there? It looks like you picked the worse possible way to get connected and you don't really want to get DISH.

I called DISH directly and got the quote above... she quoted me...\

$49.99 activation fee
$250.00 for the lease upgrade fee
$100.00 for the installation of the Voom dish
$119.99 for the SW44 switch

I told her I hadn't heard anything about having to pay for the switch and she said that is what came up on her screen as she was activating me. I told her I wanted to cancel the install until I could research it further. I then went online and tried to do the Voom/DISH setup once I found out that it was available through the website. The website, quotes the exact same thing, go try it. It notes each charge in the lefthand column as you put your package together. So, yes, they are charging for the switch now.

Hey, Laz, are any of your locals on the side bird? If so, sign up for Dish, then add the HD pack later - the 61.5 dish should be included for the local channels on the side bird...

Maybe you'd get a DP+44 not a SW44. Look you don't need a superdish if you are getting a 942 so forget the switch. maybe you need a dp34 not DP+... Maybe for you it would cost alot I'd be looking to Ebay myself if I were you. Me, I get all my stuff wholesale :) so I save on lots of stuff like that. Anyway good luck.

OK, just called a local retailer and they confirmed with me, that with the promo, the customer MUST pay for the switch. They quoted me $100 for the 61.5 and $100 for the switch. They explained that according to retail support, DISH is not reimbursing them for the switch used to connect the 2nd DISH unless its a mandatory install for locals. Therefore, if your locals are on 105, as mine are, there is an additional $100 for the switch through the retailer and $120 through DISH.

Edit:

And for the naysayers, here is the cut and paste from the website quoting my final total...

Getting Started
One Time Fees
2ND DISH INSTALLATION
$100.00
LEASE EQUIPMENT UPGRADE
$250.00
Digital Home Plan Activation Fee
$49.99
MULTI DISH SWITCH, SW44
$119.00
One Time Cost: $518.99
Monthly Equipment Fees
DISH Network DVR Service Fee $4.98
Programming
America's Top 180 (with locals) $19.99
SHOWTIME, HBO $22.99
Voom Original Package $5.00
DISH Network HD Pack $9.99
Monthly Subtotal: $62.95.

I think they have deals for international channels. I think they give discount on installs..for 61.5..wait a month then cancel the channel

If they are charging this much, I am not going back to DISH, based on principle alone. I don't need HD that bad. The pricing and customer service nightmares like this is why I left DISH in the first place. The ONLY reason I would consider them again is if they added this type of programming, and now it looks like its purely a pipe dream.

Laz,

Why worry about the SD Locals? If you have the 942 and a good OTA antenna you don't need the 105. This way aside from the upgrade to a 942 the other cost will be minimal compared to getting a DP+44. All you would need is a DP+ Twin (Which has the wing switch built in) and the 61.5 wing. maybe you are out of pocket an extra $100 but if you go through a retailer, you could probably get it done for an extra $35 for the wing. If you don't believe me PM me and I'll schedule the install for you.

942 $250 upgrade
625 $ 20 upgrade
Wing$ 35 upgrade
DHA $ 50 (taken off your first bill)
total out of pocket @ the door $355.
AEP W/all HD $101.99/mth for 1st year. ($68.99/mth 1st 3months.)

That would be unethical, if not downright dishonest.

RFI is available for a dollar a month... it's on the 61.5.

And doing the same thing with locals isn't? I'm sure you're really going to watch those spanish local channels you can get with the 61.5 free dish.

Actually I got mine so I could get a free upgrade to CBS-HD, but the additional New York channels are actually useful. Channel 55 out of long island is like WPIX used to be 25 years ago with lots of old movies and the like, while WNJB is a NJ centric PBS station with more NJ news than WNET has.....

Well, the saga continues... after a frustrating day yesterday with Comcast Tech support, I am going back to D*. I called them up and they are giving me a great deal to come back with them and get service for my primary residence(I already have it at the weeeknd house...) So, no Voom for me, at least for now...
