View Full Version : Leave 942 on?

It seems that many of the problems (although apparently not all) relating to login guide info is based on turning off the 942.

Would it be a bad idea to not turn it off? I know the fan runs all the time. Is it really shutting anything down?

(Maybe a fix for that problem will be out before long.)

I can't speak directly to the 942... but on a recent chat, they fairly reasonably explained how the DVR/PVRs work... in that, as long as the power is on, the software assumes you are watching TV and doesn't do background clean-up tasks or refresh the guide as often.

Turning the DVR/PVR "off" (standby mode) tells the receiver that you aren't watching TV, so if it needs to download new guide data or software updates, it can do that. It won't if it thinks you are watching TV.

Well, the reason I was considering leaving it on is because it seems from what I read, it loses local guide data, and you have to do a bunch of stuff to get it back...if you even get it back.

I'm new on this unit. Got it installed yesterday, and only have a couple of my 11 locals showing guide data. I did turn it off, by the way.

Oh well. Hopefully patience will reward with a patch that fixes that before too long.

When I have not used my 942 for a while (the only thing that I turn off is the TV and the Receiver--leave 942 on), it will display a "press select to continue". How does the 942 know I am no longer watching? I am useing HDMI and optical. Does it sense that the TV is turned off?

My 501 does the same. It did not do so originally. I am using s-video. Is this a recent change?

MY 301 does not go to standy.

I really don't understand what is being said here. Should one leave the unit in standy-by mode (all front panel lights off) or leave the front panel light or lights on and turn off just the TV when not in use? Does the 942 record in stand-by mode or does the unit have to be on? How about software updates? What mode does the unit have to be in? Please clarifly. thanks

You should leave the unit in standby mode (front panel lights off) when not in use. The unit will record regardless, but guide updates and software updates can only happen when the unit is in standby.

Thank you for your response. When the unit was installed, the installer told my wife not to turn the unit off and she is afraid that if the lights don't show then the unit is off and she'll miss her recorded programs. It's a word definition problem of what is off and what is off.

It is my impression that at the time you set for accepting updates, it automatcially goes into sleep mode to do the updates. I maybe wrong but this is what I have observed at 3am in the morning.

Some receivers will automatically go into stand-by after a period of inactivity or per the set update time. Others require that you manually turn the box "off".

To keep it simple, ;) I always recommend turning it "off" when not in use.
