So, the hard drive on my 510 is fried. My year commitment just expired (along with the warranty on the 510 of course) I have no problem switching to GCI cable with all of the upgrades and HD that they have added lately.
So the question is, what should I ask Dish for, for free, for signing another year commitment, what is reasonable? What do I have a chance of getting?
Thanks!

I'd talk to Dish about your options. Sometimes they'll enroll you in the warranty plan even if you're receiver already died and allow you to use it for your dead 510 - that's what I'd ask for if they don't automatically offer it to you.
If they do offer you another DVR, I'd suggest you get the monthly warranty plan as insurance.

My 508 recently died. It was about 2 years old. I called dish, they confirmed it was "well out of warranty". They then offered to advance ship a replacement to me for $35 and no commitment. When I received the replacement, I dropped the defective unit into the box and returned it with a pre-paid shipping label they sent. I felt I got excellent service from them considering I never paid for any of their warranty programs...

I think talking with E* is good advice. If you're a long term subscriber, my guess is that they'll go out of their way to do you right. They have with me a couple of times in the last 3 months. (overnighted a replacement 921 when mine went belly up, enrolling me for warranty service to take care of a toasted SW64 switch, and $0 to install new dish for Voom channels).
Of course since you're a Republican. . .

I'm on my 3rd 510 in less than a year, all of them have died except the current one I have now, which will eventually die too because they are crap, but back on topic... this last replacement I got, they overnighted it to me plus I got a credit for a months programming due to all the troubles I've had with it. They are pretty good at accomodating the customers, at least the long-time customers like myself, which is the #1 reason I stay with them. They are pretty much the only company I can count on to make things right and go out of their way to do so. A lot more than I can say about other companies I do business with.
what about those of us who don't lease our equipment. i purchased my 508 outright (ebay). it was a new-refurb and is working great... but who know if at some point down the line my HD won't cook. will they swap out owned units to good, lonstanding customers for $35 bucks or would i need to just purchase a brand new unit outright?

Which replacement receiver did E* send to you; a 501 or a 508 ?

If your are a long term user they will work to keep you. I have dish for 6 years, last December one of my old recivers died and after spending some time working with a E* rep. on the phone
I ended up with 2-510s and later on a 522 and "upgraded to leasing in stead of owning. John
