View Full Version : Audio dropouts
Is there any hope soon of fixing the audio dropouts on the 921? This is the only real problem I have (occasional reboots usually fix other infrequent glitches). I have them in every recorded program, usually only about 5 seconds long, but last night had one that must have been 30 to 45 seconds. :(
Otherwise very happy with my 921 once I got used to its unique "personality". ;)
I have audio drop-outs more and more often on OTA recordings. When it gets really bad a warm reboot will usually make it better. If a drop-out occurs, hitting the 10-sec back button 1-4 times will usually allow me to hear what was missed. On a season finale recently it dropped out right at a critical point. I had to hit back about 10 times but it finally came through. This indicates to me that the sound was transmitted, received and recorded but the 921 drops it out on play for some unknown reason.
As much as the drop out issue has been discussed on this forum I was surprised when I called tech support two days ago to inquire about a fix. I was told that this was not a known issue. I said thanks and hung up.
Reminds me of a line from the original Exorcist move. "Did you have to take an illiteracy test to get that job?"

I am only experiencing audio dropouts with OTA channels. They occur most commonly when I am tuned to an OTA HD and watching it live (not delayed, not recorded). The dropouts occur on a regular basis and last for no more than 1-2 seconds. If dropouts are happening while watching live OTA, they also show up in a recording from that OTA channel.
It's most annoying when trying to watch a newscast.

With your OTA dropouts can you check the received signal? See if it fluctuates or if it is steady. I had similar dropouts on channels where the signal wasn't steady. The signal would go from full 125 down under 90.
The cause on my end was too much gain in the OTA antenna system. I had about 42 dB of gain with the yagi and mast mount preamp. Seems the front end of the 921 receiver was getting overloaded. Inserting 12 dB of attenuation reduced the signal and now all my OTA channels are steady (signal).

I can't believe that too strong a signal is the problem in my case. I am in the boonies, probably 75 miles from the transmissions. I was even surprised that I got digital signals so well (better than analog).
My worse dropouts are on USA and SciFi channels.
OTA are bad, but these live sat channels are worse.

I keep hoping that the new software version will fix the audio drop-outs. I'm not certain that it will, but there's really nothing else on the horizon. When the signal is strong and everything's fine, and yet the audio still drops out for a second here and there, there's little else to be done from the end-user side.
