View Full Version : 587 Please an operational phone line

Let me start by saying I don't have a phone line and paying
the $5/mo "no phone line" fee is still better than paying
$20/mo for a landine that I otherwise wouldn't need.

Dish thinks I might have defective receiver. They say that
they have the "no phone line" flag set on their end which
is supposed to get rid of the 587 error but yet the 587
error requiring that a phone line be plugged in still exists
and I can't use the receiver.

The installer left a few hours ago saying that the error
should go away eventually but so far it hasn't.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Brian

Is there a way to do a hard reset on the 942 so that it goes through
the installation procedure again?

At the moment when it boots up it goes right to the 587 screen
and it's not even possible to get to the Menu.

It's working now...

I ended up having to take the receiver to work where
I have a regular phone line. Plugging it into the phone
line caused the receiver to see the dialtone (it didn't
actually dial anywhere) and pass the 587 initial phone
test. Note, I don't have any dishes at work, just a phone
line so all that was plugged in was power and phone.

I then brought the receiver back home and plugged
in the dish feed (as I previously mentioned, I don't have
a phone line at home). It remembered that it previously
already passed the 587 dialtone test and proceeded
to aquire satellite signal.

Am I going to have this problem every time a new
software update is released?

Taking the receiver out of the box, the initial installation
went fine until it upgraded to version 226 and rebooted.
That's when the 587 error popped up.

I don't have a land line either. During my setup, it of course won't go past the dial out test. I called Dish to activate the receiver, and I explained to the CSR my phone issue. She sent a signal to my receiver via the satellite and she had me put it in "Standby" for 20 minutes. After that it has worked perfectly, I have never seen a message asking for a phone line and I have had several software updates since installing it.

Thanks, the "standby" might have been what I was
missing. I left it on the initial 587 screen for four hours
with no change.

It's good to know you've been able to receive
updates without needing the phone line again.

No problem, keep us informed of how it works.
